ACADEMY STUDENT-ATHLETES AIM FOR THE TOP

Yeovil Town Women are delighted to announce that seven of our Student-Athletes have been promoted to Jamie Phillip’s first team squad for season 2019/20.

The ‘student-athletes’ are all currently excelling in their studies at Bridgwater & Taunton College, our principal education partner.  This partnership is now reaping the rewards of the previous three years of hard work to get the programme to where it is now.

The girls have all been promoted form the club’s Dual-Career Academy where they are combining a full-time education with a daily football, wellbeing and performance programme of at least 14hours of contact a week. This is unique in the South West by being completed solely Monday to Friday and all within college hours (9am – 4pm).

The dual-career programme supports the opportunity for ‘student-athletes’ to reach their full potential with the philosophy that the ‘student’ comes before the ‘athlete’ and can study any academic course. Within the promoted girls they are studying a wide range of courses from A-Levels to Level 3 BTEC Sports Science to Motorsport Engineering.

YTWFC’s Head of Performance, Ewan Greenhill, commented “Our aim is to ensure that each individual reaches their full potential, both academically and in sporting excellence. Each player has an individual plan which helps them become the best player they can be. But we also believe in creating top class people, as community is at the heart of everything this club stands for. As the girls are still studying they will still receive all the necessary support of an academy student-athlete whilst playing.”

These sentiments were echoed by Head Coach Jamie Phillip, “I have been lucky to work with these girls over the previous season and know they have what it takes to play in my first team. We have a vision to fill our first team with ‘our own’. This is just the start. It’s a fantastic programme.  We have overhauled the whole academy from our youngest age groups right through to ensure that happens.”

Bridgwater and Taunton College’s Mason Galloway, “This is a great achievement for the players that are coming through our dual career academy to now be pushing for senior football. It is excellent that the shared vision of YTWFC and the college is coming to fruition where players are getting the best coaching alongside a world class education.”
